How do I know when my heat pump needs to be cleaned?
It should be done every year or so but you can check yourself by turning off your unit, open the louvre (the white flap) and shine a light inside and see if there is any dirt and mold build up. It should easily visible if they are dirty.
What is involved with a heat pump cleaning?
A cleaning involves removing thehead off the inside unit. Placing a bib kit over the unit (to catch water & debris). Spraying special cleaners on the coils and using a specialized pressure washer to clean inside the unit. After the spraying, the unit is dried out and put back together. The outside unit is then sprayed and cleared of any debris in the coils.
Is it really necessary to get my heat pump cleaned?
The efficiency and life span of your unit depends completely on the upkeep and maintenance you provide for it. Think of it like your car engine, if you don’t do regular oil changes and maintenance your engine will eventually fail. Same goes for your heat pump, as dirt and mold builds up inside it puts a lot of extra stress on your unit causing it to work harder than necessary causing potential compressor and motor failures.
